Two Charged, Remanded Over Violent Land Dispute in Mukono

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with Mukono Police, has arraigned two men before the Mukono Chief Magistrate's Court on multiple charges arising from an alleged violent land dispute in Luwunga Village, Nama Sub-county, Mukono District.

The accused, Boniface Kayongo and Kiseka Hamuza, appeared before Chief Magistrate Gerald Emong after they were arrested during an operation conducted by officers from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and police.

According to the prosecution, the accused, together with other suspects still at large, committed several offences between October and November 2025 on land located in Kyaggwe Block 167, Plot 81.

The prosecution alleges that the suspects unlawfully destroyed banana plantations, sugarcane, cassava, sweet potatoes, and other trees belonging to Paul Tooli.

In a separate count, the accused are alleged to have destroyed eucalyptus trees, tomatoes, cassava, maize, and banana plantations belonging to Moses Kiwanuka. They also face another charge of destroying cassava and maize belonging to Abbas Kayongo.

The duo is further charged with malicious damage to property after allegedly demolishing three residential houses belonging to Stella Kiwanuka Bernadetta, the administrator of the estate of the late Joseph Kiwanuka.

State Attorney Christine Ayebale told court that the accused are also facing charges of theft of four metallic water tanks valued at approximately Shs25 million and a water pumping machine worth about Shs10 million, bringing the total value of the allegedly stolen property to Shs35 million.

Court documents indicate that the accused allegedly mobilised a group of people and forcefully entered the disputed land before grading it in an attempt to take possession of the property.

Kayongo also faces a charge of forcible detainer for allegedly remaining in unlawful possession of the land in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace against beneficiaries of the estate of the late Joseph Kiwanuka.

The accused appeared before Chief Magistrate Gerald Emong and denied all charges. They have been remanded to Kauga Government Prison until July 22, 2026, as prosecution continues with the case.
